What happens when a checker is hit?

Learn how hitting, the bar, and checker re-entry work in TrigammonX.

A single checker can be hit by either opponent in TrigammonX. When hit, it goes to its owner’s bar and must re-enter before that player can move their other checkers.

1. What is a hit?

A checker sitting alone on a point is called a blot.

If an opponent legally lands on that point, your checker is hit and moved to your bar. The opponent’s checker occupies the point.
A point occupied by two or more of your checkers is protected: neither opponent can land there.

2. What is the bar?

The bar holds checkers that have been hit. Each player has their own bar. A hit checker remains there until its owner can use an available dice value to re-enter it legally.

While any of your checkers remain on the bar, you must give re-entry priority over moving checkers elsewhere on the board.

3. Where does each colour re-enter?

BLUE CHECKERS - Re-enter through Green’s home board.
Entry points: 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30.

RED CHECKERS - Re-enter through Blue’s home board.
Entry points: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

GREEN CHECKERS - Re-enter through Red’s home board.
Entry points: 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.

These are the board’s point numbers (from Blue's perspective), not dice values. The die you use determines the entry point within your colour’s six-point entry area. Rotating the board changes your view, but does not change these entry areas.

4. Which entry points are legal?

You may enter onto:

  • An empty point.
  • A point occupied by your own checkers.
  • A point containing exactly one opposing checker—which you hit as you enter.
You cannot enter onto a point occupied by two or more checkers belonging to an opponent. Use the game’s legal-move highlights to identify permitted entry points for your available dice.

5. What if I have several checkers on the bar?

Each checker requires its own legal entry movement.

Continue entering your checkers while legal entry moves are available. Once your bar is empty, you may use any remaining movements elsewhere on the board. If some checkers remain on the bar and no legal entry is possible, you cannot move your other checkers instead.

6. What if all my entry moves are blocked?

If none of your available dice values permits a legal entry, your checkers remain on the bar and your turn ends. A later roll may offer another opportunity to enter.

These entry rules apply in both Triple Dice and Two-Dice modes.

7. Can either opponent hit me?

Yes. Either opponent can hit an exposed checker when they have a legal move to its point. Watch both opponents when deciding whether to leave a checker alone. A position that is safe from one opponent may still be vulnerable to the other.

8. What if I am hit while bearing off?

You must re-enter the hit checker and bring it back to your home board. You can resume bearing off when all your remaining checkers are home and none is on the bar. Checkers already borne off stay off the board.
